Next steps: using basic skills for practical behaviors

Saturday, March 7th, 10:00 am to approximately 11:30 am CST

This is a follow-up presentation for folks who have been to one of my basic skills clinics or my online basic skills class and wondered what the heck they were supposed to do with that information, as well as for people who might be interested in the basic skills clinic, and want to see some things that can be done with the basic skills.

The webinar is $10. Recording will be available, and can be purchased here after it's been uploaded. After placing an order, you will get an email with a link to the Google Meet meeting (before the webinar) or to the recording (after the webinar).

Overview

Feel is timing, mechanics, & use of repertoire (this is mostly about repertoire)

Just a little bit about the "what" versus the "how."

Quick review (or a speed course if you haven’t been here)

A review of the ABC pattern of behavior, and reinforcement.

How do you want this to feel? (think big, then get granular)

Some high-level decision thoughts on where to go next with your training.

Getting more granular (elements, variables, & constraints)

A quick introduction to the concepts of elements, variables, and constraints and how they can shape your training, as well as some thoughts on the "defaults" I like to have in training.

Stand still, face forward (expanding the repertoire of stillness)

A mid-level dive into the basic skill of "stand still, face forward" and a look at what it's used for.

Targets (arrange antecedents and expand repertoire)

A look at different kinds of targets, such as hands, cones, pool noodles, mats, and bells, and how they can be used for training stationary behaviors.

Movement (using targets to prompt movement)

Various ways to use targets to prompt or direct the horse's movement.

Fading targets (do it ASAP with  a cue transfer)

Targets are great for prompting behavior, but putting it on a cue makes it available in situations where you don't have a target. This is one example of shaping a pressure-based rein cue with a target, and then fading out the target so just the rein cue is used.
